Double Shot (record label)
Double Shot Records was an independent record label based in Chicago, Illinois, active primarily in the 1960s and early 1970s. The label was founded by Leonard and Phil Chess, of Chess Records fame, after they sold Chess Records to GRT (General Recorded Tape) in 1969.
Double Shot focused primarily on pop, rock, and bubblegum music. The label's most successful artists included the American Breed ("Bend Me, Shape Me"), the Lemon Pipers ("Green Tambourine"), and the McCoys ("Hang on Sloopy," though this was released before Double Shot's founding). While Double Shot never achieved the iconic status of Chess Records, it played a significant role in the Chicago music scene during its relatively short lifespan.
The label's releases were distributed nationally, and Double Shot attempted to capitalize on the changing musical landscape of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The label's output is notable for its diverse range, showcasing both commercially-oriented pop songs and some more experimental rock sounds. Eventually, Leonard and Phil Chess moved on to other ventures, and Double Shot Records ceased operations in the early 1970s. Its catalog remains a historical footnote in the story of Chicago's influential music industry.
