Bergensfjord (ship)

The Bergensfjord was the name of several ships operated by the Norwegian America Line (Norske Amerikalinje, or NAL). The most notable of these was:

  • The Bergensfjord (1913): A passenger liner built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, England. She operated primarily on the transatlantic route between Norway and the United States, carrying passengers and mail. During World War I, she served as a troop transport. After the war, she returned to commercial service until being scrapped in 1946.

Another ship of the same name was:

  • The Bergensfjord (1956): A combined passenger/cargo ship built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson in Wallsend-on-Tyne, England. She served on the transatlantic route and also offered cruises. She was sold in 1971 and renamed De Grasse, then later Rasa Sayang. She was scrapped in 1981.

The name Bergensfjord reflects the line's connection to Bergen, Norway, and the fjords of the region. These ships played a significant role in transatlantic immigration and trade between Norway and North America.
