Thomas Linacre

Thomas Linacre (c. 1460 – 1524) was a renowned English humanist scholar, physician, and classical scholar. He is primarily known for his significant contributions to the revival of classical learning in England, particularly in the fields of medicine and classical languages, especially Greek.

Linacre studied at Oxford University and subsequently traveled to Italy, where he spent several years immersed in the intellectual and artistic ferment of the Italian Renaissance. He studied Greek under the tutelage of Angelo Poliziano and devoted himself to translating and promoting the works of classical authors, notably Galen.

Upon his return to England, Linacre practiced medicine and became physician to King Henry VII and subsequently to Henry VIII. He was instrumental in the founding of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1518, serving as its first president. The College was a landmark achievement, intended to raise the standards of medical practice in England and regulate the profession.

Linacre's scholarship extended beyond medicine. He was a skilled linguist and translator, producing Latin translations of Galen's medical treatises that were widely used throughout Europe for many years. These translations significantly contributed to the dissemination of classical medical knowledge and influenced medical education. He also produced Latin grammars.

Linacre's dedication to classical learning and his efforts to elevate the standards of medicine in England cemented his legacy as a key figure in the English Renaissance.
