John Cochrane (politician)

John Cochrane (politician) was a 19th-century American politician and lawyer.

Life and Career:

Cochrane was born in Palatine, New York. He graduated from Geneva College (now Hobart and William Smith Colleges) in 1831 and was admitted to the bar in 1834. He practiced law in New York City.

Cochrane served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives, representing New York's 6th congressional district from 1863 to 1865. During the American Civil War, he was a staunch supporter of the Union cause. He was known for his strong oratory and his advocacy for the rights of soldiers and veterans.

Following his term in Congress, Cochrane became a prominent figure in New York City politics. He served as Collector of the Port of New York under President Andrew Johnson from 1865 to 1869. This was a politically significant and lucrative position.

He was later involved in the Anti-Monopoly movement and ran for Governor of New York in 1872 on the Liberal Republican and Democratic tickets, but was defeated.

Cochrane died in New York City. He is remembered for his contributions to both state and national politics during a critical period in American history.
