Mike Lockwood (physicist)
Mike Lockwood is a British space environment physicist. He is a Professor of Space Environment Physics at the University of Reading. His research focuses on the Sun-Earth connection, particularly the influence of solar variability on the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and climate.
Lockwood's work has contributed significantly to understanding the dynamics of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and their impact on geomagnetic storms. He has developed models and techniques for predicting space weather events and has investigated the long-term trends in solar activity and their potential effects on terrestrial climate. He has also studied the effects of space weather on technological infrastructure, such as power grids and satellite systems.
Lockwood is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the Chapman Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. He is a highly cited researcher in the field of space physics and has authored or co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications. He is also actively involved in science communication, frequently giving public lectures and engaging with the media to explain the importance of space weather research.
