Mold (album)
Mold is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band, Sponge. It was released on July 27, 1993, by Columbia Records. The album showcases Sponge's grunge and hard rock influences. While not initially a massive commercial success, Mold helped establish the band's sound and laid the groundwork for their later breakthrough album, Rotting Piñata. The album features singles "Neenah Menasha" and "Giants". Mold is characterized by its heavy guitar riffs, aggressive vocals, and introspective lyrics. It explored themes of alienation, frustration, and societal decay. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California. The overall reception of the album was generally positive, with critics praising its raw energy and distinctive sound. However, some found the production to be somewhat muddy. The album's title is a reference to the band's hometown of Detroit and the feeling of stagnation prevalent in the city at the time.
