SS Rotomahana (1876)

The SS Rotomahana was a pioneering iron-hulled, twin-screw steamer built by William Denny and Brothers in Dumbarton, Scotland for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. Launched in 1876, the Rotomahana was significant as one of the first ships in the world to be lit by electric light, a feature installed by Siemens Brothers. She operated primarily on routes between New Zealand and Australia, transporting passengers, mail, and cargo.

The Rotomahana was known for its speed and luxurious accommodations, quickly becoming a popular vessel for travelers. Its electric lighting system, while initially novel, proved a reliable and attractive feature that distinguished it from other ships of the era.

The vessel remained in service with the Union Steam Ship Company for several decades, playing a crucial role in connecting communities across the Tasman Sea. After a long and successful career, the Rotomahana was eventually decommissioned and scrapped. It is remembered today for its innovative technology and contribution to maritime history in the Southern Hemisphere.
