Democratic Party (Gambia)
The Democratic Party (DP) was a political party in The Gambia. The party was active during the pre-independence and early independence periods. Its founder and leader was Reverend J.C. Faye. The DP primarily drew its support from the Christian and Aku communities in Bathurst (now Banjul).
The party contested elections during the colonial era, advocating for greater self-governance and eventual independence. However, it was generally considered a smaller party compared to the United Party (UP) led by Pierre Sarr N'Jie and the People's Progressive Party (PPP) led by Dawda Jawara.
In the lead up to independence, the Democratic Party participated in constitutional talks and electoral processes. After independence in 1965, the party continued to operate but its influence gradually waned as the PPP consolidated its power. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Democratic Party had largely ceased to be a significant force in Gambian politics. Information on the party's exact disbandment or merger with other parties is scarce.
