Bill Deck
Bill Deck (born William Decklebaum) (1913-1993) was an American jazz musician primarily known as a trumpeter, though he also played trombone and occasionally sang. While not achieving widespread fame, Deck was a respected and active member of the Chicago jazz scene for several decades. He played with various local bands and ensembles, often performing in clubs and at private events. Details of his early life and formal musical training are sparse, but accounts indicate he was a self-taught musician who developed a distinctive improvisational style. Deck's playing style was described as blues-infused, exhibiting a strong sense of rhythm and a penchant for melodic ornamentation. He was known for his dedication to the traditional jazz idiom. Recordings of Bill Deck are scarce and primarily exist as privately made tapes or within larger ensemble albums of local Chicago musicians. He is remembered by fellow musicians as a reliable and dedicated performer who contributed significantly to the vibrant Chicago jazz community of his time.
