William Cain (Australian politician)

William Cain (11 June 1863 – 6 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He served as a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North Province from 1916 to 1950.

Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Cain was a bootmaker and served as president of the Victorian Boot Trade Employees Union. He was active in the Labor movement for many years prior to entering parliament.

In 1916, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council, representing Melbourne North Province. He held this seat until his death in 1947, making him one of the longest-serving members of the Council.

Cain was known for his strong advocacy for working-class issues and social justice. During his time in parliament, he supported legislation aimed at improving working conditions, increasing wages, and providing social welfare benefits.

He was a dedicated member of the Labor Party and played an active role in party affairs throughout his political career. William Cain died in December 1947, still serving as a member of the Legislative Council.
