Paradise (2016 film)

Paradise is a 2016 Russian drama film directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. It tells the story of three characters whose paths intersect during World War II: Olga, a Russian aristocrat who is arrested for hiding Jewish children during the Holocaust; Jules, a French collaborator who is investigating Olga's case; and Helmut, a high-ranking SS officer who once had a romantic relationship with Olga.

The film explores themes of faith, morality, and the human condition within the context of the Holocaust. It is shot in black and white and uses a minimalist aesthetic to emphasize the characters' inner turmoil. The characters often break the fourth wall, addressing the audience directly with their thoughts and justifications.

Paradise premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where Konchalovsky won the Silver Lion for Best Director. It was also selected as the Russian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, where it was shortlisted but not nominated.
