Røldal (municipality)
Røldal is a former municipality in what was Hordaland county, Norway. It existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. The municipality encompassed the Røldal valley, known for its stave church, Røldal Stave Church, and the surrounding mountainous areas.
Originally, Røldal was established as a municipality according to the Formannskapsdistrikt law of 1837. In 1964, as part of municipal consolidations across Norway, Røldal was merged with the neighboring municipality of Odda. Odda municipality was then incorporated into Ullensvang municipality in 2020 as part of broader regional reforms.
The area of Røldal is characterized by its dramatic landscape, featuring lakes, mountains, and valleys. The local economy traditionally relied on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. Today, the area remains popular with tourists, drawn by the stave church, hiking opportunities, and winter sports. Røldal is also known for its relatively high snowfall in the winter months.
