SERENDIP

Serendip is the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. It often describes the accidental discovery of something fortunate while looking for something else.

Etymology: The word was coined by Horace Walpole in a letter to Horace Mann in 1754. Walpole explained that he formed the word from the Persian fairy tale "The Three Princes of Serendip," whose protagonists were always making discoveries, by accident and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of. Serendip was an old name for Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
