History:

The constituency was created in 1950, replacing part of the Thornbury constituency. It was located in the northern part of Avon, a county created in 1974. The seat was abolished in 1997, being largely replaced by the newly formed constituency of South Gloucestershire, with a small portion going into the Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency.
