Egon Franke (fencer)

Egon Franke (born October 13, 1935, in Gliwice, Poland, died March 30, 2022) was a Polish fencer, competing primarily in foil. He is best known for winning the individual gold medal in foil at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Franke also won a silver medal in the team foil event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and a bronze medal in the team foil event at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He represented Poland in four Olympic Games: 1960 Rome, 1964 Tokyo, 1968 Mexico City, and 1972 Munich.

Throughout his career, Franke achieved numerous successes at the World Fencing Championships. He won team medals in foil, consistently contributing to Poland's strong fencing tradition.

Following his retirement from competition, Franke became a fencing coach, contributing to the development of young fencers in Poland. He is remembered as one of Poland's greatest fencers.
