John McGowan (Medal of Honor)

John McGowan was a U.S. Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the American Indian Wars. He served as a Private in Company G, 5th U.S. Cavalry.

McGowan earned the Medal of Honor for his gallantry in action on July 17, 1876, at Warbonnet Creek, Nebraska. During the Warbonnet Creek skirmish, a small detachment of the 5th Cavalry, led by Buffalo Bill Cody, encountered a group of Cheyenne warriors. McGowan distinguished himself by his bravery and courageous conduct in the face of the enemy.

His citation reads: "Gallantry in action." This concise citation reflects the specific act or acts of valor he displayed during the engagement.

McGowan's actions at Warbonnet Creek contributed to the overall effort to subdue hostile Native American tribes during the period of the Indian Wars. He is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
