Ahab (band)
Ahab is a German funeral doom metal band founded in 2004. Taking their name from Captain Ahab, the protagonist of Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick, their lyrical themes and aesthetics are heavily inspired by nautical literature, particularly Moby Dick and other works exploring themes of the sea, death, and the insignificance of humanity against the backdrop of immense natural forces.
Ahab's music is characterized by extremely slow tempos, crushingly heavy riffs, guttural vocals, and an overall atmosphere of bleakness and despair. Their songs are typically very long, often exceeding ten minutes in length, allowing for the development of complex and immersive narratives.
The band's core members have remained consistent throughout their career. They are often credited with helping to popularize and further develop the funeral doom subgenre, inspiring numerous other bands with their unique approach to the style.
Ahab has released several critically acclaimed albums, including The Call of the Wretched Sea (2006), The Divinity of Oceans (2009), The Giant (2012), and The Boats of the Glen Carrig (2015). Their albums are known for their conceptual coherence and their ability to evoke the vastness and terror of the ocean.
