Joe Smith (footballer, born 1908)

Joe Smith (born 14 June 1908, died 1989) was an English professional footballer who played as a winger. He is best known for his long and successful career with Blackpool, where he also served as a manager after his playing days.

Playing Career

Smith began his footballing career with Rochdale, joining them in 1928. After a spell with Stockport County, he signed for Blackpool in May 1934. He quickly established himself as a key player in the Blackpool side. He made 276 league appearances for Blackpool, scoring 10 goals. His career was interrupted by the Second World War, but he returned to play for Blackpool after the war.

Managerial Career

Following his retirement as a player, Smith took over as manager of Blackpool in 1954. He led the club to their most successful period in their history, culminating in winning the FA Cup in 1953 against Bolton Wanderers in a match commonly known as the "Matthews Final." The team, often considered one of the greatest Blackpool sides, included players like Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortensen, and Harry Johnston. He remained manager until 1958.

After leaving Blackpool, Smith managed Halifax Town for a short period.
