Bag (unit)

A bag, as a unit of measure, is an informal and variable quantity. It typically refers to the amount of a substance that can be held within a standard bag, but the size of the bag, and therefore the amount it contains, is not standardized.

The quantity represented by a "bag" depends heavily on the context and the specific material being measured. It may refer to a grocery bag, a sack, a small pouch, or another type of container. Furthermore, the degree to which the bag is filled can also affect the quantity.

Because of its lack of standardization, "bag" is rarely used in formal scientific or commercial contexts. Instead, precise units of mass (like kilograms or pounds) or volume (like liters or gallons) are preferred.

The term "bag" as a unit is more common in colloquial use, recipes, or less formal situations where an approximate measure is sufficient. Historical or regional contexts may also use "bag" as a traditional measure, though often these relate to a specific, localized bag size.
