Joti Jot
Joti Jot is a Punjabi phrase that literally translates to "light with light" or "the light merged with light." It signifies the merging of an individual soul's (Atma) light with the divine universal light (Paramatma).
In Sikhism, the concept of Joti Jot is used to describe the death of a spiritually enlightened individual, particularly the Sikh Gurus. It represents the soul’s return to its source and ultimate union with God. When a Guru passes away, it is said that their 'Joti Jot' has merged, implying that their spiritual essence has returned to the divine light.
The phrase is often used in obituaries and memorials to convey the idea that the departed soul has attained spiritual liberation and is now one with the divine. It emphasizes the continuity of the soul beyond physical death and its absorption into the eternal light of God. The term carries a profound spiritual significance and is central to understanding the Sikh concept of death and liberation. It is also sometimes used more broadly to describe the passing of any highly revered spiritual person.
