Ron Daws

Ron Daws (1937-1992) was an American marathon runner who competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics. He is perhaps best known for his grassroots approach to training and his dedication to the sport despite not having access to the same resources as many of his competitors.

Daws gained prominence in the running community for his self-coached methods and his book, The Self-Made Olympian, which detailed his training philosophy and experiences. He emphasized listening to one's body and adapting training based on individual needs rather than adhering to strict, pre-determined plans. His training often involved high mileage and included unique strategies developed through experimentation and self-analysis.

Daws qualified for the 1968 Olympic marathon team at the age of 30 and finished 24th in the race. He also qualified for the 1972 Olympic marathon team at the age of 34, finishing 45th. His dedication and independent approach made him a popular figure among amateur runners.

Beyond his own running achievements, Daws coached other runners and contributed to the sport through his writings and lectures. His emphasis on self-reliance and personalized training continues to influence runners today.
