KidsClick

KidsClick was a web directory created by librarians specifically designed to help children find appropriate and reliable websites. Launched in 1996, it aimed to provide a safe and accessible online environment for young users. The directory categorized websites across a variety of subjects, offering brief descriptions of each site to help children and educators make informed choices.

KidsClick differed from general search engines by employing a team of librarians who reviewed and selected websites based on their age-appropriateness, educational value, and accuracy. This human curation aimed to filter out inappropriate content, misinformation, and commercial sites that might be harmful or confusing to children. The directory utilized a child-friendly interface and search functionality to make it easy for young users to navigate and discover new resources.

Over the years, KidsClick evolved to incorporate features like keyword searching and topic browsing. The project was initially developed and maintained by the School of Library and Information Studies at Syracuse University, later transitioning to other organizations. The service eventually ceased operation, reflecting the challenges of maintaining curated directories in the face of the ever-changing internet landscape and the rise of more sophisticated search engine algorithms. Despite its closure, KidsClick remains a notable example of early efforts to create a safe and educational online experience for children.
