Kramer (musician)
Kramer (born Mark Kramer, June 12, 1958) is an American musician, composer, record producer and label owner. He is primarily known for his work as a founding member of the bands New York Gong, Shockabilly, and Bongwater, as well as for his prolific output as a producer, engineer, and mixer for a diverse range of artists.
Kramer's production credits include albums by bands such as Galaxie 500, Low, Half Japanese, Urge Overkill, and Butthole Surfers. He is known for his experimental and often unconventional approach to recording, frequently employing techniques such as tape manipulation, feedback, and sound collage. His production style is characterized by a lo-fi aesthetic and a focus on capturing the raw energy and emotion of the music.
Beyond his work with bands, Kramer has also released numerous solo albums and collaborated with other artists on various projects. His solo work often features experimental soundscapes and spoken word elements.
Kramer founded the record label Shimmy-Disc in 1987, which released albums by many of the artists he produced, as well as other alternative and experimental musicians. Shimmy-Disc played a significant role in the independent music scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He later founded the label Second Shimmy.
He continues to be active in music production and performance.
