Berzelia

Berzelia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bruniaceae. These evergreen shrubs are native to South Africa, specifically the Cape Provinces. They are characterized by their small, heath-like leaves and distinctive, often spherical or cone-shaped flower heads.

Description:

Berzelia species typically grow to between 0.5 and 2 meters in height. Their leaves are small, needle-like, and arranged alternately along the stems. The flowers are usually white, cream, or yellowish and are densely packed into terminal clusters. The fruit is a small capsule containing several seeds.

Distribution and Habitat:

Berzelia is endemic to the Fynbos biome of South Africa. They are commonly found on sandy or rocky slopes in mountainous areas, often in association with other Fynbos species.

Cultivation:

Some Berzelia species are cultivated as ornamental plants in gardens, particularly in regions with Mediterranean climates. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun. They are valued for their unusual flower heads and their ability to attract pollinators.

Taxonomy:

The genus Berzelia was named in honor of the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius. The exact number of species within the genus is debated, but generally ranges from 10 to 15.
