Hugh Gibson (judge)
Hugh Gibson (1916-2000) was an American lawyer and federal judge. He served as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas from 1979 to 1986, and as Senior Judge from 1986 until his death.
Gibson was born in Austin, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in 1937 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1940.
Following graduation, Gibson entered private practice in Texas. He served in the United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war, he returned to private practice.
In 1979, Gibson was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas vacated by Judge Robert Otis Hitt. He was confirmed by the United States Senate and received his commission on May 11, 1979. He assumed senior status on February 14, 1986.
During his time on the bench, Judge Gibson presided over a wide variety of cases, including maritime law, securities fraud, and civil rights. He was known for his fairness, integrity, and judicial temperament.
Judge Gibson died in Galveston, Texas in 2000.
