John Sands (printer)

John Sands (1818-1873) was a prominent printer and stationer in Sydney, Australia, during the mid-19th century. He is best known for establishing John Sands Ltd., a company that became a significant force in the printing, stationery, and publishing industries.

Born in England, Sands emigrated to Sydney in 1839. He initially worked as a bookbinder before venturing into business on his own account. In 1852, he established a printing and stationery business, which expanded rapidly to become John Sands Ltd.

The company produced a wide array of printed materials, including books, newspapers, legal documents, maps, and commercial stationery. They were also known for their high-quality engraving and lithographic work. John Sands Ltd. played a significant role in supporting the growing commercial and cultural needs of colonial New South Wales and beyond.

Sands was active in public life, serving as an alderman on the Sydney Municipal Council. He was also involved in various charitable and community organizations. Upon his death in 1873, the business continued under the management of his family and associates, maintaining its prominent position in the printing and stationery sector for many years.
