Lecythium

A lecythium (plural: lecythia) is a small, globular or bulbous vase with a narrow neck, a flaring mouth, and a single handle. It was a type of ancient Greek pottery, primarily used to hold perfumes, oils, or unguents. Lecythia were commonly associated with funerary rituals and often placed in tombs as offerings or grave goods. While sometimes decorated with elaborate scenes depicting myths or everyday life, simpler, undecorated examples were also common. The shape is characterized by its relatively small size, making it convenient to handle and pour small amounts of liquid. Though similar to other Greek vases like the aryballos, the lecythium's more elongated neck and characteristic shape distinguish it.
