Peter Bonfield (engineer)

Sir Peter Bonfield, KBE, FREng (born 1944) is a British engineer and businessman. He is best known for his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of British Telecommunications (BT) from 1996 to 2002.

Bonfield received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Loughborough University. He then joined Texas Instruments, eventually becoming Chairman of Texas Instruments Europe. Prior to joining BT, he was Chairman and CEO of ICL (International Computers Limited).

During his time at BT, Bonfield oversaw significant changes in the telecommunications landscape, including the expansion of internet services and the development of mobile technologies. He also led BT through a period of considerable debt. His leadership at BT was met with both praise and criticism, particularly regarding executive compensation and the company's financial performance.

Since leaving BT, Bonfield has held various non-executive directorships and advisory roles. He was knighted (KBE) in 1996 for services to the electronics industry and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng).
