Ectatomma

Ectatomma is a genus of ants in the subfamily Ectatomminae. These ants are primarily found in the Neotropical region (South and Central America, and parts of Mexico) and are known for their generalized predatory habits.

Characteristics:

• Morphology: Ectatomma ants are typically medium to large in size, with a robust build. They possess well-developed stingers. Their mandibles are strong and triangular, suited for grasping prey. The promesonotal suture is typically absent or weakly defined.

• Behavior: These ants are typically solitary foragers or forage in small groups. They are active hunters, preying on a variety of insects and other invertebrates. Some species may also scavenge or collect honeydew. They are known to be aggressive and deliver a painful sting when threatened.

• Nests: Ectatomma ants nest in the soil, often under rocks or logs. Nests can be simple or complex, depending on the species.

• Taxonomy: The genus Ectatomma has been subject to taxonomic revisions over time. The Ectatomminae subfamily itself was once considered part of the Ponerinae subfamily.
