USS Lorikeet (AMS-49)

The USS Lorikeet (AMS-49) was an Auk-class minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the path of invading forces. The Lorikeet served during World War II and was named after the lorikeet, a brightly colored, small parrot.

Launched on 14 October 1944 by the Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation in Chickasaw, Alabama, and commissioned on 26 May 1945, the Lorikeet arrived too late to see action in the major conflicts of World War II. After shakedown, she reported to the Operational Development Force in September 1945 and conducted mine recovery operations off the coasts of Japan and Korea.

Following World War II, the Lorikeet was reclassified as a coastal minesweeper, MSC-49, on 7 February 1955. She continued to serve in various capacities including training operations and coastal patrol.

Decommissioned on 1 December 1955, the USS Lorikeet (MSC-49) was placed in reserve. Ultimately, she was struck from the Navy Register on 1 May 1962, and sold to Mexico on 1 August 1962, where she was renamed ARM Jesus Urueta (P-107). Her ultimate fate is not definitively recorded in available sources.
