Maloum
Maloum is a type of West African percussion instrument. It is a traditional plucked lute found primarily in Mali, particularly amongst the Wassoulou people. The maloum typically features three or four strings and is often made from a calabash gourd resonator covered with animal skin, with a wooden neck. It is played by plucking the strings, often with the fingers. Historically, the maloum has been used in storytelling and as accompaniment for vocal music, often conveying social and historical narratives. The instrument plays a significant role in Wassoulou musical traditions and cultural identity.
