Berkail
Berkail is a constructed language (conlang) created by user 'Zompist' (Mark Rosenfelder), also known for creating the language Verduria and the influential The Language Construction Kit. Berkail is designed to be a "naturalistic" language, meaning that it aims to resemble languages that might evolve naturally, rather than being based on strict logic or specific aesthetic goals.
Berkail is notable for its complex phonology, morphology, and syntax. Its phonology features a large number of consonants, including ejectives and implosives, leading to a distinct sound. The morphology is agglutinative, meaning that words are formed by stringing together morphemes, each carrying a specific grammatical meaning. The syntax features head-final phrases, and a relatively free word order, constrained by topic and focus.
The language has a well-developed grammar and a sizable vocabulary, although it is not as extensively documented as some other conlangs. Documentation exists primarily on Zompist's website, including a grammar sketch and a lexicon. The language continues to be developed and refined, with Zompist providing updates and explanations on various linguistic features. Berkail serves as a testbed for various linguistic ideas and mechanisms.
