André Dumont (geologist)

André Hubert Dumont (15 February 1809 – 28 February 1857) was a Belgian geologist and professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Liège. He is best known for his work on the geological mapping of Belgium and his division of the country's strata into distinct stages.

Dumont's contributions to geology were significant, particularly in the areas of stratigraphy and geological mapping. He meticulously surveyed the geological formations of Belgium, and his observations and analyses led him to develop a detailed stratigraphic framework. He identified and defined various geological stages, which are still used, in modified form, today.

His most important work was arguably the "Carte Géologique de la Belgique", a geological map of Belgium that he created and published in 1849. This map was a groundbreaking achievement, providing a comprehensive and accurate representation of the country's subsurface geology. It was instrumental in the development of Belgium's mining industry and in understanding the country's natural resources.

Dumont's work extended beyond Belgium, and he also made contributions to the geology of neighboring regions. He was a prominent figure in the scientific community of his time and played a key role in the advancement of geological knowledge. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium.
