Wolfen (film)
Wolfen is a 1981 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Wadleigh and starring Albert Finney, Gregory Hines, and Diane Venora. The film follows a New York City police detective, Dewey (Finney), investigating a series of brutal murders committed by seemingly supernatural creatures. These creatures are large, shadowy, wolf-like entities referred to as "Wolfen". The investigation leads Dewey into the city's hidden underbelly and into conflict with the local Native American community, whose ancient legends seem to hold the key to understanding the killings. The film explores themes of urban decay, police procedure, and the clash between modernity and ancient beliefs. The creatures themselves are largely kept mysterious, contributing to the film's unsettling atmosphere. The film's special effects, particularly the depiction of the Wolfen, were groundbreaking for their time, utilizing innovative techniques to create a sense of dread and otherworldly presence. Despite mixed critical reception upon release, ''Wolfen'' has since gained a cult following and is often cited for its atmospheric visuals and unsettling tone. The film's score, composed by James Horner, is also frequently praised for its contribution to the overall suspenseful mood.
