65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot

The 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1758. Over the course of its service, it participated in numerous conflicts around the world, including the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the New Zealand Wars.

Originally raised as the 2nd Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot, it was re-designated as the 65th Regiment of Foot in 1758. The regiment's territorial affiliation, "(2nd Yorkshire, North Riding)," was added in 1782 to facilitate recruitment.

The regiment saw extensive service in North America during the American Revolutionary War, including engagements at Brooklyn, White Plains, and Fort Washington.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the 65th was stationed in the West Indies, where it participated in operations against French colonies. It also saw service in the Peninsular War, where it distinguished itself in several battles.

In the 19th century, the regiment was deployed to various parts of the British Empire, including India and New Zealand. It played a significant role in the New Zealand Wars during the 1840s and 1860s, participating in numerous campaigns against Maori tribes.

In 1881, as part of the Childers Reforms, the 65th Regiment of Foot was amalgamated with the 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot to form the York and Lancaster Regiment. The 65th became the 1st Battalion of the new regiment. The York and Lancaster Regiment served until 1968.
