Taj Mohammed (Guantanamo Bay detainee)

Taj Mohammed, also known under various aliases, was a citizen of Afghanistan held in extrajudicial detention in the United States' Guantanamo Bay detention camp, in Cuba. Mohammed's Guantanamo Internment Serial Number was 853.

He was transferred to Oman on January 16, 2015. The Department of Defense (DoD) announced his transfer along with five other Afghan detainees.

Little independently verifiable information about Taj Mohammed's background and activities prior to his capture is publicly available. The DoD publicly alleged that he was a member of the Taliban and involved in hostile activities against U.S. and coalition forces. These allegations have been subject to debate given the lack of due process afforded to detainees at Guantanamo.

The Periodic Review Board process, established during the Obama administration, determined that continued detention was not necessary and that Mohammed could be safely transferred.
