Pooka (band)
Pooka was an American indie pop band formed in New York City in the mid-1990s. The band's core members were sisters Sharon and Edie Gormeley, who shared vocal and songwriting duties. Pooka was known for its melodic songs, intricate harmonies, and introspective lyrics, often exploring themes of love, loss, and urban life.
The band released several EPs and two full-length albums: Pooka (1997) and Modern Vampire (2001). Their music received critical acclaim for its sophisticated arrangements and the sisters' distinct vocal styles. Pooka toured extensively throughout the United States, opening for acts such as The Magnetic Fields and Luna.
While Pooka never achieved mainstream commercial success, they cultivated a dedicated following within the indie music scene. They are often cited as an influence by contemporary female-fronted indie bands. The band unofficially dissolved in the early 2000s, with Sharon and Edie Gormeley pursuing individual musical projects. After a hiatus, Sharon Gormeley returned to performing in 2023.
