The Minister oversees the formulation and implementation of policies related to national defence, security, and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). This includes military operations, defence procurement, international defence relations, veterans' affairs, and national service programs (if applicable).
The Minister is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Minister is a member of Parliament, typically from the ruling coalition. The Ministry of Defence is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.
The current organisational structure typically includes Deputy Minister(s) who assist the Minister in their duties. The Chief of Defence Force, the highest-ranking military officer, reports to the Minister.
