Meibomeus
Meibomeus is a rarely encountered anatomical term referring to the meibomian glands, also known as tarsal glands. These glands are located within the eyelids, specifically embedded in the tarsal plates, and are responsible for secreting meibum. Meibum is an oily substance that is a crucial component of the tear film, preventing evaporation and maintaining the ocular surface's health. The term "Meibomeus" functions as a synonym for "meibomian" when describing structures, diseases, or conditions related to these glands. While not a common term in modern medical literature, it is occasionally found in older texts or within specialized anatomical contexts. Dysfunction of the meibomian glands is a common cause of dry eye disease.
