Rock Creek (Potomac River tributary)

Rock Creek is a major tributary of the Potomac River that flows through Washington, D.C., and Montgomery County, Maryland. The creek originates in Montgomery County and flows southward for approximately 33 miles (53 km) before emptying into the Potomac River in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

The Rock Creek watershed encompasses a diverse range of environments, including suburban development, forests, and parkland. The creek and its surrounding parkland, Rock Creek Park, provide significant recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, including hiking, biking, and picnicking.

Historically, Rock Creek powered numerous mills and industries. Today, it is a valuable natural resource facing challenges from urbanization, including stormwater runoff and pollution.
