HMT Alvis

The HMT Alvis was a range of military trucks manufactured by Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, India, under license from Alvis Vickers (later BAE Systems Land Systems). These vehicles were primarily intended for logistical support and troop transport within the Indian Armed Forces.

The Alvis Stallwart, a high-mobility load carrier, served as the basis for the HMT Alvis. The Indian version retained the key characteristics of the Stallwart, including its amphibious capabilities and all-wheel drive, enabling it to traverse difficult terrain. The Indian variants were often adapted and modified to meet specific operational requirements of the Indian military. The HMT Alvis served in a variety of roles, including carrying supplies, transporting personnel, and acting as a platform for specialized equipment. Specific configurations included cargo carriers, water tankers, and fuel tankers.

The vehicles played a significant role in supporting the Indian Army in various operational environments, including high-altitude areas and regions with limited infrastructure. The HMT Alvis has gradually been replaced by more modern logistical vehicles in the Indian Armed Forces, but a number likely remain in service in reserve units. The production and maintenance of these vehicles contributed to the development of indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities within India.
