Briançon

Briançon is a commune in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department and the highest city in France, located at an elevation of 1,326 metres (4,350 ft).

Briançon is renowned for its Vauban fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which were built in the 17th and 18th centuries to protect France from invasion from the east. These fortifications include the city walls, forts, and communication routes that form a cohesive defensive system. The most notable forts are the Fort des Salettes, Fort des Trois Têtes, Fort du Randouillet, and Fort de l'Infernet.

Historically, Briançon held significant strategic importance due to its location on the border with Italy. It has served as a key point of passage and defense throughout its history.
