Max (gorilla)

Max was a western lowland gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla ) who resided at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was notable for his longevity and status as a beloved figure within the local community. Born in the wild in Cameroon around 1968, Max arrived at the Audubon Zoo in 1969 and lived there until his death on August 11, 2011.

During his time at the zoo, Max became a popular attraction, known for his calm demeanor and distinctive silverback coloration, a characteristic of mature male gorillas. He was a significant animal in the zoo's gorilla breeding program, although he did not produce offspring. His presence contributed to educating the public about gorillas and the importance of conservation efforts to protect the species in the wild.

Max's long lifespan for a gorilla in captivity made him a noteworthy animal. His health was closely monitored by the zoo's veterinary staff, and his care included a specialized diet and enrichment activities designed to promote his physical and mental well-being.
