Bergner's
Bergner's was a department store chain primarily located in Illinois, with locations also in Indiana and Wisconsin. Founded in Peoria, Illinois, in 1889 by Peter A. Bergner, it grew to become a significant regional retailer. Bergner's offered a variety of merchandise, including clothing, accessories, home goods, and cosmetics.
Throughout its history, Bergner's was known for its customer service and community involvement. The chain underwent several ownership changes, including being acquired by Carson Pirie Scott in 1989, and later becoming part of the Proffitt's (later Saks Incorporated) portfolio. Ultimately, it was part of The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc.
Bergner's, along with the other Bon-Ton stores, declared bankruptcy in 2018 and subsequently liquidated all of its stores, ceasing operations. The closure of Bergner's marked the end of a long-standing retail presence in many Midwestern communities and a significant loss of jobs. The brand name was eventually acquired by CSC Generation, but as of late 2023, there have been no announcements regarding plans to revive the Bergner's retail chain.
