List of Nationalist Party MPs (Ireland)
This page lists Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to the Parliament of the United Kingdom who were members of the Irish Nationalist Party. The Irish Nationalist Party, also known as the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), was a political party that campaigned for Home Rule for Ireland within the United Kingdom. It dominated Irish politics from the 1880s until the 1918 general election.
The party was founded by Charles Stewart Parnell in 1882, succeeding the Home Rule League. Its membership comprised predominantly Catholic middle-class and tenant farmer representatives from across Ireland. The party's influence waxed and waned depending on political circumstances, achieving considerable power during periods when the British Liberal Party depended on its support to form a government. Key figures besides Parnell included John Redmond, John Dillon, and T.P. O'Connor.
The party pursued its goals through parliamentary tactics, leveraging its voting strength in the House of Commons to advocate for Home Rule legislation. They successfully pushed through the Third Home Rule Act in 1914, although its implementation was suspended due to the outbreak of World War I. The Easter Rising of 1916 and the subsequent rise of Sinn Féin dramatically eroded the IPP's support. In the 1918 general election, Sinn Féin won a landslide victory, effectively supplanting the Nationalist Party as the dominant force in Irish nationalism. Many former Nationalist MPs either retired or joined other political movements.
This list includes those MPs who formally declared their allegiance to the Irish Nationalist Party and held seats at any point during the party's existence. It may exclude some individuals who loosely identified with nationalist sentiments but did not formally join the party. Individual MP lists may also be organised by constituency, or chronologically.
