Ascendant (2021 film)
Ascendant (also known as Divergent Series: Ascendant) was a planned science fiction action film that would have served as the fourth and final installment in The Divergent Series, following Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015), and Allegiant (2016). Based on the Divergent trilogy of young adult dystopian novels by Veronica Roth, the film was intended to conclude the storyline established in the previous movies.
The intended plot of Ascendant was to pick up after the events of Allegiant, further exploring the world outside the walls of Chicago and delving into the Bureau of Genetic Welfare's true purpose. It would have focused on Tris Prior, Four (Tobias Eaton), and their allies as they navigated new threats and made difficult choices about the future of their society.
Originally slated for a theatrical release in March 2017, the film was ultimately cancelled as a theatrical movie after the disappointing box office performance of Allegiant. Lionsgate subsequently announced plans to conclude the series with a television film and potential spin-off series. However, these plans were also eventually abandoned, leaving The Divergent Series unfinished on screen. The main cast, including Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, and Miles Teller, were expected to reprise their roles in Ascendant.
