USS Raymond (DE-341) was a ''Cannon''-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy. Named for Lieutenant Commander Robert H. Raymond (1900–1943), who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his service during the Battle of Guadalcanal, the ship served during World War II.
Construction and Commissioning
The ''Raymond'' was laid down on 21 May 1943 at the Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan. She was launched on 24 August 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Robert H. Raymond, the Lieutenant Commander's widow, and commissioned on 23 November 1943, with Lieutenant Commander James A. Donovan in command.
Service History
Following shakedown, the ''Raymond'' departed the East Coast in early 1944 for the Pacific Theater. She conducted escort duty in the Pacific Ocean, protecting convoys from Japanese submarine attacks and participating in anti-submarine warfare operations.
