1928 U.S. Open (golf)

The 1928 U.S. Open was the 32nd U.S. Open, held June 21-24 at Olympia Fields Country Club (No. 4 Course) in Olympia Fields, Illinois, a suburb south of Chicago. Johnny Farrell defeated Bobby Jones in a 36-hole playoff to win his only major championship.

The tournament marked the fourth and final time Jones lost in a U.S. Open playoff. He had previously lost in 1922, 1925, and 1927. Jones, an amateur, had won the previous two U.S. Opens.

Heavy rains plagued the first two days of the tournament, making scoring difficult. Jones led after 36 holes, followed closely by Farrell and several others. In the final round, Jones faltered on the back nine, opening the door for Farrell. Farrell, however, bogeyed the 18th to force a playoff.

The 36-hole playoff was contested the following day. Farrell shot a 70 in the morning round to Jones' 73, giving him a three-stroke lead. In the afternoon, Jones rallied but ultimately fell one stroke short, with Farrell posting a 75 to Jones' 73, securing a one-stroke victory with a 145 total.
