Pletzl

The Pletzl (Yiddish: פּלעצל, meaning "little place" or "little square") was the traditional Jewish quarter in Paris, France. It was centered around the Rue des Rosiers in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, in the Marais district. Historically, it was a vibrant community populated by Ashkenazi Jews, particularly those of Eastern European origin, who immigrated to France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Pletzl served as a cultural and religious hub, featuring synagogues, kosher shops, delis, and community organizations. It was characterized by its Yiddish language and culture, and its distinctive atmosphere set it apart from other areas of Paris.

While the Jewish presence in the Marais predates the late 19th century, the influx of Eastern European Jews solidified the Pletzl as a distinct Jewish quarter.

Over time, the demographics and character of the Pletzl have changed. While a Jewish presence remains, with active synagogues and Jewish businesses, the area has also experienced gentrification and an influx of tourists. The influence of Yiddish culture has diminished, though efforts are made to preserve and celebrate its heritage. Today, the Rue des Rosiers and the surrounding streets are still recognizable as a historically Jewish area, albeit with a more diversified population and economy.
