Ko Tao

Ko Tao (เกาะเต่า) is a small island in Thailand, part of the Chumphon Archipelago and located in the Gulf of Thailand. It is administratively part of the Ko Pha Ngan district of Surat Thani Province. Its name translates to "Turtle Island," reflecting its historical abundance of sea turtles.

Ko Tao is a popular tourist destination known primarily for its scuba diving and snorkeling. Numerous dive sites surround the island, catering to all experience levels. The relatively shallow waters and clear visibility make it a particularly attractive location for beginner divers and for obtaining diving certifications.

Beyond diving, Ko Tao offers other activities such as rock climbing, hiking, and bouldering. The island's interior is mountainous and forested, providing trails with scenic viewpoints. The beaches surrounding the island vary, with some offering calm, shallow water ideal for swimming and sunbathing, while others are more secluded and suitable for relaxation.

The island has experienced significant tourism development over the past few decades, with a corresponding increase in infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants, and dive shops. While the island maintains a relaxed atmosphere, it has also faced challenges related to environmental sustainability and resource management due to its increasing popularity. Transportation to and from Ko Tao is primarily by ferry from the mainland or from neighboring islands such as Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan.
